The Self

The Self

ZINC PLATE ETCHING

SIZE: 42.0 x 59.4cm

MEDIA/PROCESS: zinc plate etching on heavyweight cartridge paper

DESCRITPION:

The Self is the first large-scale etching I have produced. It is comprised of religious symbolism apparent in the symmetrical layout, drapes and cloaked figures, as well as the hand gestures which are a nod to renaissance paintings.

I decided to use religious symbolism due to the virtues that they reference, in particular the sinful essence of the self, and how the self is judged as amoral by itself and thus, disposed of, hence the concealed bodies and obscured faces of the standing figures who blindly worship an unseen precense. As such, the etching is not about religion, rather the universal ideas related to the human condition which are present within religions across the world.
